Personally I'm happy with things as they are - it's part of the challenge trying to find quicker ways of getting around using wormholes, a good place to settle and so on. I love the idea that a carriage could be powered by gunpower rocket barrels and squish a buncha spiders at once~! Or, you could just hitch a beefalo to it... Perhaps when multiplayer comes out, people will have more cause for carriages if multiple people can ride at once? Multiplayer seems perfect for a group mode of transportation.
